Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Do I need a doctors referral?

A. A doctors referral is not necessary, although if you do have a doctors referral or require this for your medical insurance provider please bring the letter with you.

Q. Do you accept private medical insurance?

A. Patients claiming on private medical insurance should request a receipt when payment is made to reclaim the fees from their medical insurance provider. Please check with your insurance provider in advance that Osteopathy is covered on your policy and how you reclaim the treatment fees.

Q. How long are appointments and treatments

A. Treatments are usually completed within 30 minutes.

Q. How many sessions will I need?

A. The recovery time varies for each condition and each patient, an estimate can be provided at the consultation. Treatment is kept to the minimum necessary to resolve your problem.

Q. What can I expect on my first visit?

A.  You can expect a detailed medical history to be taken. This will involve the Osteopath asking questions to find out the details of your current complaint, and your past medical complaints.

A medical examination will then be carried out by the Osteopath this is to observe the movement of the body and carry out any tests to determine a diagnosis. The Osteopath will then make a diagnosis and treat using the most appropriate technique. Finally the Osteopath will provide advice to improve recovery by diet or exercises to carry out at home.

Q. What should I wear?

A. During the medical examination and treatments you will probably be asked to undress to your underwear, so please wear something you are comfortable in. If you would feel more comfortable in shorts and a sports top please bring these along.

Q. Will you contact my GP?

A. Your GP can be contacted, but only with your consent. If further tests or information are required we may liaise with your GP.

Q. Can I bring a friend or relative with me to the appointment?

A. Yes, if you wish someone to be with you at the consultation or treatment.

Q. Should i have regular check ups?

A. Many patients take a longer-term view of their health, resulting in regular preventative treatments becoming popular. You can benefit from regular spinal checkups by your Osteopath.

Some patients may benefit from ongoing maintenance treatments. This is often the case for people who have recurring or degenerative conditions. These options can be discussed with your Osteopath.
